The Shady Ladies celebrate National Garden Week

Several of our members opened their gardens for visitors during National Garden Week.  Mickey generously shared plants and knowledge.  Some were lucky enough to get one of her gorgeous irises. Anne toured us around her hosta collection and sought advice for creating new garden areas. Diane showed us her wonderful containers and what a view of Johnson City from her deck!  Sara invited an agent from the county extension office to teach us about proper soil sampling.  Heather gave us a sneak preview of new additions in her unique Asian themed garden.  Pat served us the best iced tea and showed us her lush and beautiful mountain garden. And it is always a treat to visit Phyllis and her elegant formal garden. The Shady Ladies were happy to help Ms. Phyllis with some weeding.  Thank you to all who participated in this very special week.

Spring field trip to Art in Bloom

Recently, three of our super talented Shady Ladies participated in the Art in Bloom exhibition at William King Museum in Abingdon, VA.  Sara Bowers, Anne Reid and Heather Jacobs joined designers from around the region for this special three day event. Each designer interpreted a work of art in flowers and the design was displayed alongside the work of art.  Several of us travelled up to Abingdon to see the display. It was breathtaking. These ladies created such beautiful, glorious and unique designs.

Sara and Anne chose pieces from the Heritage collection. Sara chose a crazy quilt and Anne chose a magnificent green woven chair. Heather completed two designs, both inspired by work in the Suzanne Stryk exhibition. Here are some photos.

And some behind the scenes images of these amazing ladies hard at work:

Don’t let your peonies be a flop!

The garden is waking up and there are so many chores to do.  There’s nothing more disheartening than seeing a large, lovely, lush peony bush splayed out and flopping all over the place. There are quite a few products on the market designed to help cage and support peonies but I’ve found that homemade cement wire cages work really well. And if you’re like most Southern gardeners, you’ve probably already got a roll of cement wire in your garden shed for making tomato cages.

I just roll it out and cut it to the desired height. Five or six squares high seems to be what most of my mature peonies need.  I add a twine grid on top to keep the flowers from swaying this way and that way. By the time the garden fills in, the cages are completely disguised by the plant. These work well on Annabelle hydrangea too!

Of course you could just cut them all and enjoy them inside too!

Art in Bloom

Please join us for this very special event! Several of Shady Oaks talented designers will be participating in the Art in Bloom exhibition at the William King Museum in Abingdon, VA.  We are so excited and proud to be part of Art in Bloom. This event brings together more than 25 expert floral designers from the region. Each designer will interpret artwork from William King Museum of Art’s five galleries during Art in Bloom on April 14-16. Throughout this special three-day fundraiser, tour the floral designs inspired by the exhibitions on display including Suzanne Stryk: Notes on the State of Virginia, Coal Country, Touching the Sacred, and Appalachian decorative arts from our the Museum’s permanent Betsy K. White Cultural Heritage Gallery.

We will carpool on Saturday April 14 to see the show.  Click here for more information about the exhibition and related programs.
